The Position 
The Director of Food Choice Architecture (FCA) is part of a team of Compass Senior global 
directors focusing on the unique needs of our global Google account. The role directs and 
delivers, in the specific subject matter area of choice, architecture which, simply defined, 
creates environments where features, noticed and unnoticed, can positively influence 
choice. 

This role is responsible for creating tools (options) that influence people’s behavior in a 
predictable way, without forbidding options or forcing outcomes. 
 
Key Role responsibilities 
 
1. Behavioral Economics 
General: 
● Act as and be the global subject matter expert on further developing and applying 
behavioral knowledge and insights in corporate food services. 
● Identify and develop opportunities (knowledge development, demonstration projects, etc.) 
to partner with global partners in this space. 
● Develop, maintain and refresh training materials and coordinate the rollout and 
implementation of training across all relevant Compass @ Google stakeholders. 
● Coordinate the rollout and implementation of agreed upon guidelines and insights across 
Compass @ Google sites. 
 
2. Enabling function 
General: 
● Identify, develop, build out and maintain key initiatives around the world to ‘enable’ 
Googlers and their families to make the appropriate food choices at work, at home and in 
the community. Google is increasingly concerned that the value of their food program at 
work needs to be extended beyond the campus. 
● Tool kits include but are not limited to: defaults, expecting error, understanding mappings, 
giving feedback, structuring complex food choices and creating incentives 
● Utilize proven marketing strategies for item placement to maximize positive choice 
Potential 

Design Guidelines: 
● Contribute to integrating choice influence in cafe and micro-kitchen (snack environments) 
design 
● Continually innovate space, display and food/plating designs to better engineer choice 
Nutrition 
● Contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of global guidelines on 
menu and menu item/dish labeling, ingredient disclosures, food allergies, diets, 
dietary disclosures and portion sizes at Compass@Google sites.

It will also involve running workshops in the business to up skill staff in the theory of behavioural economics, managing the overall Behavioural Insights in Action program and working with the business to identify the requirement for Behavioural Economics input into projects/decisions.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience

  • A detailed understanding of the theory of Behavioural Economics and other sources of behavioural insights (e.g. psychology, neuroscience etc.)
  • A passion for Behavioural Economics and a desire to share this with others
  • A desire to continually build skills and experience in the area of behavioural economics through self-education
  • A good mix of mix of qualitative and quantitative analytical skills for the conducting and analysing of primary research
  • Strong consultancy and advisory skills
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the application of Behavioural Economics, consumer behaviour/psychology, ideally in a private sector organisation
  • Relevant Bachelor's Degree or higher, or extensive, relevant research/consumer behaviour industry experience
  • Experience in conducting strategic qualitative and quantitative research, ideally some of that in the financial services industry

Yale - Program Director, Center for Customer Insights

Reporting to the Faculty Director, the Yale Center for Customer Insights, the Program Director will manage and grow the portfolio of Discovery Projects with leading corporations. The program director will also be responsible for developing new programs based on the center's IP (intellectual property) (Behavioral Economics and Big Data) to deepen engagement with existing and new corporate partners.

Principal Responsibilities

 1. Working collaboratively with Faculty Leadership and YCCI Discovery Project staff, Director of Programs will be chief operational lead for securing, scoping, planning and delivery of all Discovery Projects throughout the year. Discovery Projects are consumer research driven research projects executed by MBAs and led by Yale SOM faculty in collaboration with leading Fortune 500 partner organizations.
2. Work with Faculty Leads and corporate partners to scope projects and draft proposals.
3. Shepherd student teams through management of semester-long projects to assure consistently high quality deliverable. Coach students on presentation design and execution to assure ideas are effectively translated to audience.

The U.S. Social and Behavioral Sciences Team (SBST) seeks exceptionally qualified individuals to serve as Fellows for 2014–2015. Individuals who can secure continued financial support from their home institution or other outside funding are especially encouraged to apply. 
 
JOB SUMMARY: 
 
The SBST helps federal agencies increase the efficiency and efficacy of their programs and policies, by harnessing research methods and findings from the social and behavioral sciences. The team works closely with agencies across the federal government, thinking creatively about how to translate social and behavioral science insights into concrete interventions that are likely to improve federal outcomes and designing rigorous field trials to test the impact of these recommendations. 
 
The SBST is a small, multi-disciplinary group of experts, coordinated by the Office of Science and Technology Policy and organized under the Performance Improvement Council at the General Services Administration (GSA). Collectively, the team has a diverse mixture of scientific expertise from fields such as economics, psychology, and statistics, as well as experience performing rigorous evaluations in complex operational settings. As the SBST works to pursue the agencies’ priority goals, policy areas include health, education, tax and finance, housing, environment, criminal justice, and so forth (see http://www.usa.gov/directory/federal/ to learn about federal departments and agencies). 
 
Fellows must possess a unique set of technical and professional skills. This includes extensive knowledge of at least one field within the social and behavioral sciences, the ability to creatively apply research knowledge within the federal government setting, the ability to manage the day-to-day operations of a field trial, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. (Duties and qualifications are further elaborated below.) 
 
The position lasts for one year beginning in August or September 2014 (precise start date negotiable), with the possibility of renewal. Fellows will be located in the GSA building at 1800 F Street N.W., Washington, D.C. 20405. DUTIES: 
Your major duties and responsibilities are as follows: 
 Learn about select federal agency priorities and design human-centered policies and programs to better serve citizens; 
 Creatively translate insights from the social and behavioral sciences into concrete recommendations for how to improve those federal programs, policies, and organizations; 
 Work closely with agency partners to design rigorous experimental trials capable of testing the relative efficiency and efficacy of proposed interventions; 
 Communicate regularly with agency partners, and any outside collaborators, in order to: ensure the rationale behind intervention ideas and trial design are clearly understood and meet agency goals; ensure that field experiments are implemented as planned; share updates on trial status; and discuss the implications of results; 
 Effectively manage the operations of select field experiments, for example, ensuring that the design, implementation, and results are properly documented and shared; Perform data analyses and interpretation;

 Write project reports and policy memos for academic, agency, and public audiences;

 Assist, as needed, on additional projects being managed by other SBST members; 

 Attend weekly SBST meetings, provide updates on trial status, and be generally available to

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: 
 Ph.D. in a social and behavioral sciences field (e.g., economics, psychology, political science, 
statistics, sociology, public policy, etc.), or a Master’s Degree plus two or more years of relevant 
experience. 
 Two or more years of experience designing, implementing and analyzing experiments. 
 General knowledge of behavioral economics, and highly specialized knowledge of at least one domain of a study within the social and behavioral sciences. 
 Ability to think creatively about how insights from the social and behavioral sciences can be 
translated into concrete interventions that are practically feasible within specific federal programs, policies, or organizations. 
 Statistical competency, including use of at least one programming language (e.g., R, Matlab, SAS, Stata, etc...).

LSE - Behavioural Economics and Big Data Internship (Paid)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work on cutting edge research with researchers from the
London School of Economics and Cambridge University.

The project investigates the financial spending patterns of consumers using a newly acquired
large-scale data set, with direct applications to both academia and to industry. The position
provides a unique opportunity for someone with an interest in developing a career in big data
and behavioural economics. The work involves the secure handling and analysis of data
provided by an online financial services provider, including putting in place a local database
infrastructure for testing research questions.

You will be:
• Experienced with a major statistics package (e.g. Stata, R)
• Comfortable with handling big data sets, and ideally have knowledge of SQL
• Available for at least the 2 months of August and September
• An undergraduate student from a top university in a numerate discipline e.g. STEM
subjects, Economics/Finance

HSBC - Senior Manager, Behavioural Economics

Overview of role and responsibilities

      The role holder is required to:

  • Provide expert thought leadership input on behavioural economics to shape the continuous development of the Conduct Risk Approach and ensure its design is ‘future proof’ drawing on ‘best in class’ evolutionary thinking on behavioural economics from both the regulatory and academic environments, and practice from across the industry. In addition to work with the competition team in Group Legal to help shape the approach to proactively managing the competition risks faced by HSBC. Specifically the job holder will:
    • Be informed on the FCA approach, the Competition and Markets Authority approach and other academic and industry practice works on behavioural economics (i.e. FCA Occasional Paper No 1: Applying Behavioural Economics at the FCA) as appropriate to develop strategy for inclusion of behavioural economics in the UK Bank Conduct Risk Approach
    • Deliver high quality day to day support and challenge from a behavioural economics perspective in respect of product design, pricing, marketing, sales and after sales processes to all UK global business lines within HSBC Bank plc.
    • Identify and prioritise risks to consumers inherent in business models, including but not limited to, analysis of evidence of  mismatches between products’ declared function/features and consumers actual use; root cause analysis of consumer biases generating unfavourable consumer outcomes; analysis of underlying consumer preferences,  assessment of the impact of consumer biases on product design and development.
    • Perform and / or commission analytical work to inform and support advice given.
    • Communicate behavioural economics outputs to inform business strategy and first/ second line oversight and challenge.

  • The jobholder is operating in a highly fluid regulatory environment, where regulations and regulators are often in a state of  change, and where regulations are becoming increasingly complex. In addition to regulation, due regard will be necessary for the effective analysis and interpretation of academic and Industry work on behavioural economics and application to the Bank.
  • A major challenge for the jobholder will be to ensure the differing demands and approaches of a number of separate internal and external stakeholders are met by the Bank.
  • The jobholder will need to be able to advise senior management in a persuasive, professional manner, and will need to balance the requirements of the letter and spirit of the regulations against the commercial realities and the drive of the business to achieve/exceed its goals for sustainable compliant growth.

This is a senior role in a team which designs services for public and private sector clients which influence citizen and customer behaviours.
