Head of Behavioural Science - Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute (Public Sector Focus)

An exciting opportunity has opened to become Head of Behavioural Science at Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute in the UK. The role will have a particular focus on the public sector, including providing behavioural insights consultancy to central government departments through the new Behavioural Insights Framework. Whereas previously there was a single supplier for government contracts involving behavioural science (the 'Nudge Unit', aka the Behavioural Insights Team), this has now been widened to six suppliers, including Ipsos MORI.

In this role, you will build, shape and lead the behavioural science practice within the Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute. The role is based in London but will be linked with other divisions and a global network of behavioural scientists. You will work with our existing teams of behavioural researchers, ethnographers and neuroscience experts as well as teams of researchers covering all public policy areas.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience and Qualifications

  • Proven or emerging leader who has helped develop a behavioural science business, ideally within a research company or similar environment.
  • High profile within behavioural science and track record in applying it to real world public policy problem.
  • Detailed understanding of the behavioural literature and both mainstream traditions (behavioural economics and social /health psychology)
  • Experience of experimental design (and preferably quasi-experimental) and understand what that would mean in both a field and lab setting
  • Demonstrable experience of business development and sales activity success.
  • Operate with the pace and agility required to succeed in a commercial environment. Combines careful thought with a commercial focus in rapid response to briefs & client enquiries.
  • Appreciation of the strengths / weaknesses of a range of research methods - qualitative, quantitative, mixed method.
  • Strong innovative research and analytic skills. Quantitative or Qualitative experience including literature searching and evidence synthesis; user testing; developing and evaluating digital interventions to change behaviour; statistical analysis and publishing and presenting findings.
  • Postgraduate degree in social psychology, behavioural economics or related behaviour change discipline
  • Excellent engagement skills in order to translate academic behavioural insights to the wider business.

Client Relationships

  • Project support, advice and direct delivery to clients. Provide best practice updates to and training for clients.
  • Cultivate outstanding client relationships
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities.

Thought Leadership

  • Network with external experts - stay on top of new developments in behavioural sciences. Develop productive partnerships with academics and other sources of innovative thinking.
  • Thought Leadership/Profile - develop Ipsos MORI's image as experts by maintaining a media and social media profile, publishing articles, conference presentations etc.
  • Lead Research & Development - direct a programme to develop new or improve existing research products, tools or approaches.

Building Internal Capability

  • Proposal/pitch ownership and consultancy.
  • Upskill colleagues in Behavioural Science - embed best practice & provide training
  • Define suitable metrics and targets to share with Ipsos teams.

Talent Management

  • Build a core team of behavioural scientists, featuring talented people who fit Ipsos’ strategic and business requirements.
  • Develop an entrepreneurial and scientifically rigorous environment.
